How to check the work

  1. Check direction before beauty: a letter drawn top-to-bottom is correct even if it looks shaky.
  2. Mark only two errors per page. More than that and the child stops reading your marks.
  3. For puzzle sheets, the answer key is the last page of the PDF — print it separately and keep it aside.
  4. Re-print the same sheet after two weeks and compare: that comparison is the real progress report.

Print checklist (30 seconds)

  • Paper: plain A4 or US Letter, 90–120 g/m² so markers do not bleed through.
  • Printer setting: “Actual size” / 100% — “Fit to page” shrinks the guide lines.

That habit — try, check, revise — transfers directly to word problems, which is where most maths marks are lost.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Read the puzzle out loud twice. The second reading is where the details land.
  2. Underline the facts, one per line, before touching the answer boxes.
  3. Encourage a written guess. A wrong guess on paper is easier to fix than one held in the head.
  4. When they are stuck, ask “what do you already know for sure?” instead of giving a hint.
  5. After solving, ask them to explain how they knew. Explaining doubles what sticks.

Three ways to make it harder (or easier)

  • Easier: give one fact away for free at the start.
  • Harder: remove the answer boxes and ask for the reasoning in full sentences.
  • Team version: two children each get half the clues and must talk to solve it.

Mistakes that ruin the activity

  • Rescuing too early. Thirty seconds of silence is not failure, it is thinking.
  • Doing several puzzles in a row; one solved and explained beats four half-done.
  • Judging by speed. The slow solver who can explain the answer understood more.
